Shine Collective is in the Gutter.

July 17th, 2008

Gutter Magazine that is! Photographer and all around good guy Joe Giordano approached us with this idea of wanting to do 80’s style studio portraits using Shine clothes and jewelry. We love the result- “Say Cheese” is fun, the photos are amazing and who doesn’t love a little glitter and braided headbands?

Take a look at this month’s Gutter Magazine.

As if we didn’t have enough to do keeping up with our own personal blog, Facebook, Twitter, sorely neglected MySpace and Virb accounts plus our shop site and oh yeah- our actual store- we’ve now added another irresistible social networking site to the mix… the fashion community of Chictopia.com is our new BFF.

For starters- it’s instant blogger gratification- and just when I needed a hug. The members respond right away to my outfit du jour and my ramblings on said outfit- and here’s the kicker- everyone is so nice! In the world of Jezebel, TMZ and Perez, nice don’t come easy. I personally encourage all fashionistas- girls and boys- to pull out your tripod (or housemate), your fantasy outfits, your best slouchy pigeon-toed stance, give good arm and go for it!

If you just want to watch, you can sign up, be a voyeur, post comments and take it all in…

I am loving the new shapes and colors right now. The Saint Grace tulip skirt is almost all gone, but we’ve still got a few left. This, hands down is my favorite new thing. I alternate between the black and the pinky/purple one- combine it with a flirty top from my closet (tucked in!) and a wide belt- it’s a fresh new silhouette that can be worn a bunch of different ways with one stealth purchase. The floral robe from Sophie Golightly is our bit of Carrie Bradshaw- I love this! It’s sexy, soft and practical and if you really want to do it like Carrie- pair it with the over-the-top pearls from Pretty Young Thing and of course- wear it to bed! The necklace from Draugsvold is a chunk of architecture. Wear it with an LBD and you’re set.

Girls gone wild.

July 6th, 2008

Last night we proved a bachelorette party can be fun and (yes!) tasteful. Sans the usual and embarrasing tiara, boa and fake rubber phallus, our bride Nila wore her turquoise Sir Alistair Rai bubble dress and stood out beautifully in the sea of black dresses. There was no question who was the star of the show. Almost everyone had on a little something from Shine - jewelry, dresses, bags- it made me so proud.

The perils of patriotism.

July 3rd, 2008

Growing up in VA, we were allowed to blow up all kinds of stuff on the 4th of July. Danger! Sometimes we would combine two great things together- like hotdogs and bottle rockets- just to see what would happen. The outcome was usually not good- and my mother was always screaming about how that kid lost his eye last summer and how important our eyes are and all… Ahh memories.

It seems now the only danger us big kids get into on the 4th of Ju-ly is dressing for the occasion. I only have 4 words for this practice- Just Don’t Do It. Most can’t pull it off successfully- and one either looks like the packaging for sparklers or president of the Betsy Ross fan club, and really- it’s the equivalent of the 3D Christmas sweater. If you’re feeling patriotic- perhaps go with one color of the flag- a pop of red, a dress in a deep royal blue, a crisp white skirt or denim.

If you can’t resist the urge- just look at the photo below and run the other way.

ps: Shine Collective will be closed on the 4th- we can’t find anything to wear… happy holiday!

A Continuous Read.

July 2nd, 2008

I’ve really been enjoying the men’s fashion blog A Continuous Lean. It’s refreshing to read insights on fashion from the male perspective - especially one with the obviously good taste and intelligence of Paul + Williams partner Michael Williams. His latest post on the boys of Glastonbury in their Wellies is definite eyecandy, but the post on his obsession with Perot Charts is enough to send this Excel Spreadsheet Junkie into a tailspin.

Read and subscribe to A Continuous Lean.

And the bad news. Perot charts! Look how things got mucked up after Bush came along.

Sale away.

June 30th, 2008

If ever there was a time to drop some coin on your wardrobe it’s now. July and August means clearance for everyone in retail, and with a few pending Shine buying trips to NYC on the docket, we like to look at Refinery 29’s site for the best leads on sales in the city. New York Mag posts sales every week online and in print along with fashion insiders blog Top Button. If you’re not getting up there anytime soon- we have amazing finds right now in the store- on not one- but three racks of SALE merch. Unbelievably, fall is upon us and we’ve got to make way for the goodies in store…

Transformers

June 26th, 2008

Resident glam girl Michelle Géczy came in to the shop yesterday wearing a gorgeous color block silk dress. She added this amazing Draugsvold necklace (that she’s been dreaming about for a while) to it and the dress went from ‘Wow’ to ‘Damn! Love the dress- but where’d she get that f’ing necklace?’

There’s something about the push and pull of the two weights- her lightweight silk juxtaposed with the chunky necklace created a new balance that is very forward and completely interesting. She wore it out last night and was the belle of the dinner table.

If you want this one- sorry- we usually only get one of each design- but we are always stocking new Draugsvold all the time.

See more Draugsvold Jewelry here.
