ART: First Friday Artist: Xavier Schipani

Xavier Schipani is a graduate of the Maryland Institute College of Art; she majored in Illustration with a concentration in Gender Studies. She primarily works in black and white, on paper using sumi ink, pencil and graphic pens. She has lived and studied in France, Los Angeles, Philadelphia and Baltimore where she spent the better of the past eight years. Her work illuminates ideas of; gender, sexuality, and identity as being limitless abstract ideas, that are influenced by the states of religion, history and discovery. She has been researching critical areas of history where sexual identities and survival of self were perilous and almost impossible journeys. Her knowledge gained in her Gender related classes became one of the most valuable tools in her work, creating a language for her to own and manipulate with visual communication.
Xavier has exhibited in Baltimore, Washington D.C., Los Angeles, San Francisco, Portland, Philadelphia, and AIX and Provence. She has worked for several members of the Indie Music scene, including the creative direction and illustration for the band Espers‘ current album III, and was acknowledged for creating one of the top 20 album covers of the year in 2009. She is currently operating her own publication/press which she started in the past year, out of Baltimore and New York called the “Dope Coke Pope Press.” She plans on staying in Baltimore until March, when she will move to New York to teach workshops and do a lecture series at the New School, affiliated with Parsons School of Design.
